You might want to dig into the book on provenance—sometimes the dealer or previous owners have a story that clarifies the watch’s past, or raises a few red flags. I always check if the serial numbers match and if there’s any documentary evidence of its service history; those details can reveal whether it’s been gobbled up by half-baked restorations or stand as a true original. And, between us, a watch that’s been “enhanced” with aftermarket parts usually loses some authenticity—and star power in the collector’s eyes. Getting a second opinion from a specialized restorer has saved me more than once from an overhyped disaster.
